Domingo's paper:
Online Learning is becoming a new way of teaching, .
The revolution in IT is experiencing a profound impact upon teaching and learning. We are now in an era of change from a model based upon transmission of knowledge form teacher to learner, to its construction within a learning community from exposition to facilitation. Human use of computing is growing and as a result networking technologies such as the Internet are having a high impact on our lives.
Online Education open a new debate, for some people this new model of training/education will be a new model to follow, others are more sceptics. Personally I believe that the model will stay here with us and as technology, experience and research evolve online learning will become a major force. Think about the ‘infinite’ possibilities of this medium, online networks create communications across terrestrial boundaries, across cultures and on a global scale. Concepts of space and time are changing, and of how and with whom people can collaborate, discover new communities, explore new ideas, new resources, and new cultures.
I am attending this course from the other side of the Atlantic (Spain) far away from most of you. F2f or traditional teaching will not allow this interaction, but virtual learning is not only a new medium of learning, there are more positive aspects about this new model of learning. For an Instructor virtual learning will mean more flexibility and the possibility to explore new cultures but at management level online learning will reduce learning costs.
On the other hand, ‘web-phoebes’ are worried that the benefits of learning together may be lost and that it will be a bad day for knowledge, for feelings and for the joys of gathering and groups. What is very clear is that as the Internet expands, opportunities to use it for teaching and learning will expand too.
Educationists all over the world are experimenting with various forms of online learning. I have met many academics that are very keen to adopt these new ways of teaching and learning in their subjects. Institutions and Organizations are investing heavily in technological systems, thus creating conditions in which networked learning can be widely available. One day all of us will be part of an “educational global village”.
